High-nitrogen lawn fertilizers are contributing to our water pollution problems, impacting both our drinking water and our surface waters. Legislation to limit the amount of water-soluble nitrogen in lawn fertilizers sold or used on Long Island passed the Assembly in 2019, but the Senate failed to bring it to a vote and it died.
We remain committed to the concept of limiting the actual amount of nitrogen in fertilizer sold on Long Island to 12%. We do not support measures which permit manufacturers to sell their high nitrogen products and place the entire burden of environmental protection on users by requiring precise calibration of spreaders and limits for each application. These measures have not worked in other coastal communities.
